Tackling our Frequently Asked EV Charging Questions

We know it can feel overwhelming when you’re considering an electric vehicle. Don’t letEV charger options frighten you – it can actually be very convenient to charge an EV. We’re answering our frequently asked questions at Woodhouse Nissan Bellevue to illustrate just how simple it can be.
What are the Different Levels of Charging?
Charging is divided into three main levels:
- Level 1 charging – the portable 120-volt charger provides up to five miles of range per hour.
- Level 2 charging – the 240-volt charger, which can be found at public charging stations or installed at your home, provides up to 28 miles of range per hour.
- Level 3 charging – also called DC Fast Charging, only found at select public charging stations, provides up to 20 miles of range per minute.
How Often Do You Need to Charge?
This can vary, just like it varies how often drivers fill a car up with gas. It depends on your vehicle’s electric range, how often you drive, and your driving conditions. The Nissan LEAF, for example, boasts an impressive 212-mile range.
That means that with a fully charged battery, you can drive up to 212 miles before you need to recharge the compact hatchback (under ideal conditions).
How Do You Know if Your Charge is Running Low?
Your EV will show you your battery life somewhere in your instrument cluster or display screen. With some models, such as the Nissan LEAF, you can also remotely check your battery life through your smartphone.
The available NissanConnect® EV app shows you your remaining range and provides up-to-the-minute charging info, even while you charge.
How Much Does It Cost to Charge?
There are lots of different options when it comes to paying for electricity. When you are using an at-home charger, the costs come out of your standard electricity costs, after you pay for the charger and installation, if applicable.
Some public charging stations allow you to charge for free, although not many. If they aren’t free, the costs are decided by the individual charging stations. Some charge per minute, while others will charge for the amount of electricity used, while still others use a membership fee.
